Hinges and Such...

Even the hinges, knobs, and locks take work in this house!  We have been enormously blessed with some pieces of history that deserve to be put back up on display.  As Jeff always says, "We are building a brand new 100+ year old house."  Between these beautiful salvaged gifts and the pieces and oddities that Jeff and I have been buying and saving over the last 20 years, this house will definitely have a few stories to tell.

Christmas Chandelier

Months ago, I was out trying to look for lights for the house and I fell in love with a chandelier that I knew wasn’t meant to be.  I looked around to see if I could find it used or “damaged”, but finally gave up and made do with other ideas that were nice, pretty possibilities... we don’t always get what we want!  Well, Jeff surprised me this morning with the one that I loved so much!  I can’t believe I’ll be in this house by next Christmas... and this will be hanging over my dining room table.

Another Delivery : Wall Boards

Clean space is about to be filling back up with more piles.  This time, instead of 3000+ sq. ft. of floor boards, it will be full of 6000 sq ft of 3/4"  wall boards.  Oh, and there's no crew to unload it all... other than US!  I'm ready for days like this to be over with.

Random House Pics

Flooring is IN and it feels so good to have a clean space with no piles of wood for a while!

Floors. So many floors.

More floors are going in.  I mostly cut for Jeff and Randy on the downstairs boards, and the kids and I plus Christopher Rook worked on the upstairs while Jeff built porches.

Glasswork

Most of the design of this house has come from things that Jeff and I have been buying and saving up for the past 19 years.  Stained glass that we've had put away has been in the plans from the beginning.  Doors, doorknobs, sinks... we are pulling it all out and finding perfect spots for most of what we have.  But, there have been a few things that we've had to scout out.  This house does not need modern air vents or returns.  It doesn't need modern hinges or door locks.  It doesn't need sheetrock.  As I've said many times... this is an art project.  We've been creatively and painstakingly renovating houses since the boys were tiny... and we were designing hypothetical ones long before that.  We didn't just turn crazy... we've been crazy for quite some time.  (thisoldhome.blogspot.com : See 2008- Making fireplace tiles from salvaged marble threshold strips or 2006 - designing and hand cutting every custom porch baluster or … well... any of it.)  One of the things we're looking for is another stained glass piece.  But, much to our dismay, the cost of good glass pieces has gone up a lot in the past few years.  Jeff found a pretty weird church piece with a few broken pieces (and a weird shield representing St. Peter's cross and the keys to Heaven's gate) and was able to get it for a good price.  Within a few days, the top arch was taken off (in tact... yay!), and he is now working on taking the rest of it apart diamond by diamond.  It will be reworked into the rectangle that we were hoping for.  I really like the frame, and Jeff says it's solid as a rock.  I'm hoping he can make something cool inside one day once the house is finished and he can have hobbies again.
